BaTEGS Summer School 2026 “Democracy (Education) and Film”

Are there any contact points between democracy and the medium of film and if so, where might they be found? Might film contribute to or even detract from the process of democratisation or might the politics and poetics of film-making themselves correspond to structures usually found in forms of government? Where does the notion of education fit in all of this and how might the idea of participation shape the pathways of learning? Join us to explore all of the above questions and – more importantly – ask additional ones to shed a light on the deep-rooted entanglement of cinema, democracy and education.

The BaTEGS Summer School will feature an excursion to Filmhaus Nürnberg, a communal cinema located in Nuremberg yet known throughout Germany for its continuing work in film preservation as well as its contributions to the recognition of film as an art form with an inherent educational mandate.
